Courses on intermediate level (lectured in Finnish)

KEMI5121 Materiaalikemia ja nanoteknologia, 4 ECTS, Prof. Carita Kvarnström

Advanced courses (lectured in English, lectured every second year)

KEMI5132 Experimental techniques for materials characterization, 7 ECTS, Prof. Carita Kvarnström and Doc. Pia Damlin

Learning outcomes: Objectives: The course provides an introduction to the properties of soft materials and the chemical characterization techniques for nanomaterials and particles and thin films.

Short description of the content: Introduction to soft materials, macromolecules, polymers, different carbon allotropes macromolecules, thin films, self-assembled monolayers. Properties of solids as mechanical, electrical and optical, determination of size and shape mean molar masses will be presented. Following techniques will be discussed more in detail: Mass spectrometry, MALDI-TOF, Field-Flow Fractionation, FFF, Sedimentation, viscosity, contact angle, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron, TEM and SEM, Scanning Probe Microscopy (AFM), Ellipsometry, UV-vis-NIR, In situ external and internal FTIR, Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, Photocurrent measurements. At the end of the course some experimental techniques will be demonstrated.

KEMI5182 Functional Materials, 5 ECTS, Prof. Carita Kvarnström

Learning outcomes: The course is intended to provide an introduction to soft materials chemistry focusing on functional mainly organic materials.

Short description of contents: Introduction to chemical and electrochemical methods of synthesis of electronically conducting polymers. The chemical and physical properties of these compounds and their characterization with different techniques will be discussed. Fullerenes and their chemistry, their characterization in liquid and solid phase. Polymerization of fullerenes and fullerene-metal polymers. Synthesis, purification and characterization of carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide will be presented. Characterization of different allotropic forms of carbon and some inorganic 2D materials will be presented. A brief introduction to different techniques for nanostructuring of conducting polymers, fullerenes and carbon nanotube materials is made. Examples of applications of the different materials in optical devices (light emitting diodes, organic solar cells, smart windows etc), transistors, sensors, medical applications are presented.

KEMI6519 Applied FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, 5 ECTS, Doc. Pia Damlin

Learning outcomes: The course gives the student an introduction to Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy techniques, their short historical developments, and their basis on molecular vibrations, symmetry and to spectra-structure correlations. Different measurement techniques (like diffuse reflectance, attenuated total reflectance, Infrared and Raman microscopy, and imaging) will be explained in order to give the student a broad overview of commercially available instrumentation. After the course the student is familiar with principles, instrumentation and application of FTIR and Raman molecular spectroscopy techniques.

Short description of contents: Review of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy as analytical and identification/problems solving tools in fields like forensics, medicine, planetary explorations, oil industry and pharmacology. Through the use of literature examples and case studies the joint application of these spectroscopic methods will be highlighted to show how development of workable strategies towards characterization and identification can be achieved. Emphasis will also be on combination techniques based on optical and electrochemical techniques, called spectroelectrochemistry, which is a field of specialization of the research group.

Languages of instruction: English
Teaching methods: Lectures 24 h, seminars, practical demonstrations
Further information on recommended year of study: Lectured every second year, next in autumn 2017

Our group is actively involved in “the MDP in Physical and Chemical Sciences, Materials Chemistry (MSc)”. This program provides students with an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates chemistry and physics (prog. leaflet). The programme offers the students an interdisciplinary study program where chemistry and physics is integrated. For more details, follow this link or contact admissions@utu.fi
